Fourteen years on the other side of the desk

Most travel websites are written by people who have never had to explain to a guest, at 7am, why the boat they booked online is not coming. I have. That is the whole reason this site exists.

Who is behind AnVivu Travel

My name is Ngan. I have worked in Vietnamese tourism since 2008, and almost all of it face to face with foreign travellers.

I started in Sapa, guiding French, American and British visitors through the valleys around town — and, before each tour, sweeping the floor, washing dishes and serving breakfast, because that is how you start in this trade. My English did not come from a classroom. It came from three seasons of walking downhill with people who were tired, hungry and asking questions.

Since 2012 I have worked in hotels in Hanoi's Old Quarter — first on reception, then as front office manager, and now managing a small hotel on Ma May street, a few minutes' walk from Hoan Kiem Lake. Fourteen years of check-ins, check-outs, and of being the first person a guest talks to when something has gone wrong.

What that desk taught me

A hotel reception is where the truth about tours comes out. Not in the reviews — in person, the next morning, while someone is waiting for their luggage.

• The cruise that was sold as "luxury" and turned out to be a windowless cabin below deck.
• The day trip that spent two of its eight hours in a jewellery shop nobody asked to visit.
• The sleeper bus booked through a street-corner desk that never came, with nobody to call.
• And the trips that went beautifully — which, it turns out, almost always came from someone who told the guest the awkward parts in advance.

I have spent years listening to both kinds. AnVivu Travel is my attempt to sell only the second kind.

Why this site exists

Guests started asking me to arrange things — a car to Ninh Binh, a boat in Ha Long, a night in Sapa — because they trusted the person at the desk more than a search result. Some of them still message me on WhatsApp years later, from home, to book their next trip in Vietnam.

That is a small thing, and it is the only credential I would actually believe if I were you: people who already came, went home, and came back to the same person.

How we work

• No payment on this website. You send your dates, we send a written price and exactly what it covers. Money comes later, if you want to go ahead.
• A person answers. Messages land in a real inbox in Hanoi, not a bot. If your plan will not work — wrong season, too many kilometres in one day, a hotel I would not put my own family in — I will say so before you pay.
• The awkward parts up front. What is not included, what the weather does in that month, which boats cut corners. You will read it here, not discover it there.
• One office, not a chain. AnVivu Travel Company works from 23 Ma May in the Old Quarter — the street we know best. There is one team, and you can walk in and find us.

What we will not do

• We will not put you on a boat when the harbour authority says the weather is wrong — not even if you insist.
• We will not sell you Fansipan, or three days on a Ha Giang motorbike, if what you have told us about your knees, your licence or your experience says otherwise.
• We will not publish reviews we wrote ourselves, or borrow anybody else's. Our reviews page is empty until real travellers fill it.

One more thing, since we are being honest

I grew up in a farming family in Hoa Binh, and I still prefer mountains to beaches. If you ask me where to go and you give me any freedom at all, I will point you north — to the terraces, the market days, and the villages where the day still starts at four in the morning. Consider that my bias, declared in advance.
