Which Ha Long Bay cruise should you book? Ten boats, compared honestly
Guests ask me this at the front desk almost every week, usually holding a phone with six browser tabs open. I run through the same questions with them every time, so I am writing it down instead.
I have never captained one of these boats. What I have done, for fourteen years, is stand at a hotel reception the morning after guests come back from one β and hear what they actually thought, once the cruise operator was not in the room. That is a different kind of knowledge than a brochure, and it is what this page is built on.
Start with what kind of traveller you are, not the star rating
Every boat on Ha Long Bay calls itself luxury. Ignore that word entirely and ask yourself one of these six questions instead.
Tight budget
Amanda Legend starts at US$128 a person for a Junior Cabin, and Amanda Premier at US$141. Both are two days, one night, on the classic Ha Long route. Neither is the cheapest boat on the bay β cheaper ones exist β but both are ones I would actually put a guest on. The cheapest boats cut the things you notice first: thin walls, a buffet instead of a served meal, cabins with no window at all.
Travelling with kids
Hera Boutique has a Family Suite for four from US$172 a person, and Amanda Premier Cruise gives every cabin its own balcony from US$141 β useful when a child needs somewhere to run off energy between the cave visit and dinner. Bigger boats also give a child more deck to move around on, and more flexibility if they need an early night.
Honeymoon or anniversary
Le Journey Elegance is the one I send couples to: every suite has a bathtub, most have a private balcony, and there is a hot-and-cold jacuzzi on the bow, from US$143. If you want a bathtub of your own with a terrace outside the door, look at the Royal Suite on Amanda Premier β from US$183. There are only a few on board, so it goes first.
You want a swimming pool
Only two boats on this list actually have one. Hera Luxury Day Cruise has an outdoor pool with a water slide straight into the sea, and it is a single day, from US$75 β no overnight cabin to worry about. If you want the pool and a night on the water, Amanda Luxury Cruise β Lan Ha Bay has a pool and a spa on board, from US$224. Everything else on this page has a jacuzzi at most, not a pool β check before you book if that matters to you.
You want fewer boats around you
Amanda Legend Cruise has five cabins. That is it β a wooden boat built for a couple, a family or a small group of friends who do not want to share a sundeck with two hundred strangers, from US$128. If you also want to trade the crowded classic Ha Long route for the quieter southern bay, Amanda Luxury β Lan Ha Bay and Le Journey Elegance both sail toward Lan Ha, which sees far less boat traffic than the Sung Sot Cave side of Ha Long. So does Mila Grand, new in 2026, where even the entry suite is 45 mΒ² with its own balcony, from US$155.
You only have one day
There is exactly one option: Hera Luxury Day Cruise. Pool, water slide, mini golf, a seafood buffet, caves by bamboo boat and a swim at Frog Pond, all in seven hours on the water, and you are back in your Hanoi hotel by nine that night. From US$75.
All ten boats, side by side
| Boat | Bay | From | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hera Luxury Day Cruise | Ha Long & Lan Ha | US$75, 1 day | Only have a day, want a pool |
| Amanda Legend Cruise | Ha Long | US$128 | Just 5 cabins, most privacy |
| Le Journey Premium | Ha Long | US$139 | Straightforward 4-star, 20 cabins |
| Amanda Premier Cruise | Ha Long | US$141 | Every cabin has a balcony |
| Le Journey Elegance | Ha Long & Lan Ha | US$143 | Honeymoon, jacuzzi on the bow |
| Mila Grand Cruise | Lan Ha (via Ha Long) | US$155 | New in 2026, 45 mΒ² balcony suites |
| Amanda Cruise | Ha Long | US$156 | 25 cabins, the widest choice of cabin types |
| Hera Grand Luxury Cruise | Ha Long | US$165 | Small 5-star boat, every cabin 35 mΒ²+ |
| Hera Boutique Cruise | Ha Long | US$172 | Wooden boat, family and honeymoon suites |
| Amanda Luxury β Lan Ha Bay | Lan Ha (via Ha Long) | US$224 | Pool + spa, quieter bay |
Prices are per person, sharing a cabin, cruise only, for the entry-level cabin. Prices are for 2 days 1 night; every overnight boat here also runs a 3 days 2 nights programme β ask us for that rate. Hera Luxury Day Cruise is a single day.
What nobody tells you about the big boats versus the small ones
Bigger boats β Amanda Cruise with 25 cabins, Le Journey Premium with 20 β have more facilities and more staff, but you are one of forty or fifty couples on the same schedule: same cave visit time, same buffet seating, same photo spot with everyone else's phone in the frame. Smaller boats like Amanda Legend, with five cabins, feel calmer, but a wooden hull with fewer cabins also rocks more when the wind picks up, and the on-board extras are simpler. Neither is wrong. It depends on whether you came to socialise on the sundeck or to sit quietly with a book and watch the karsts go past.
Three things travel agents don't always mention up front
1. The Hanoi transfer is a separate line item
Every price on this page is for the boat itself β the cabin, meals, the on-board programme. The shuttle or car from your Hanoi hotel to Tuan Chau Harbour is priced separately, usually US$20 to 40 per person return depending on the boat, and we add it to your quote once you tell us your hotel. If a price you saw elsewhere looks unusually low, ask what it does and does not include before you compare it to ours.
2. "From US$156" means the smallest cabin
The headline price on every boat's listing, ours included, is for the lowest cabin category. On Amanda Cruise, for example, that US$156 Deluxe Cabin sits alongside a Junior Suite, a Senior Suite and a 60mΒ² Amanda Royal Suite, all priced higher β the table on each boat page lists every one. It is not dishonest advertising β it is standard practice across the whole industry β but it does mean the number you see first is rarely the number you will actually pay if you want more space.
3. Late July to September is typhoon season
If a storm is forecast, the harbour authority in Ha Long stops all departures, and no cruise operator β us included β can overrule that. We reroute, rebook or refund the unused part of the trip when it happens, but it is worth knowing before you book a tight two-day window in the wet season that this is a real possibility, not a rare exception.
How I actually answer this question at the desk
When a guest asks me in person, I do not start with the boat. I start with three questions: how many nights, how many people, and what would ruin the trip for you if it went wrong. A couple who says "we just want to be left alone" gets pointed at Amanda Legend or Lan Ha Bay, not the boat with the biggest spa menu. A family with two tired kids gets pointed at whichever boat has the earliest dinner seating, not the one with the best-reviewed sundeck bar. The star rating on the boat's own marketing rarely answers the question that actually matters to you.
It also helps to know what a two-day, one-night cruise actually includes as standard across almost every boat on this list: a welcome drink on boarding, a cave visit (Sung Sot on the classic route, Dark and Bright Caves further toward Lan Ha), kayaking or a bamboo boat, and a cooking class β usually Vietnamese spring rolls with the chef β before dinner. Where boats really differ is in cabin size, deck space per guest, and how many other cabins you are sharing that same schedule with β which is exactly why the table above sorts by that rather than by star count.
Where our information stops
Everything above comes from the boats' own published cabin rates and what our guests tell us afterward β I have not personally slept on all ten of these boats, and I will not pretend otherwise. If you want a first-hand read on a specific cabin category, tell us your dates and we will point you to the boat where we have the most direct feedback, not just the one with the best margin for us.
